Uncle Sam's pot patent proves pot prohibition patently pathological

The United States of America "as represented by the Department of Health and Human Services" procured patent 6,630,507 on October 7, 2003 for "Cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants" for such medicinal uses as "stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and HIV dementia."

This proves that classifying marijuana as a Schedule I substance having “no current use for medical treatment in the United States" is a fraud. It also shows how hypocritical and sociopathic the Fed is in persecuting medical marijuana patients -even in the 13 States with LEGAL medical marijuana (9 of which got it via ballot initiative. Such persecution is another reason for NATIONAL ballot initiatives.)

They are patenting "nonpsychoactive cannabinoids" to make it clear that drugs are A-OK as long as you don't enjoy them! "Neuroprotectants" means marijuana is preventive medicine for your brain.

Brinna's Broadside seems to have scooped the blogs, not to mention the mainstream media. She has a good analysis with relevant links, so I won't steal her words like marijuna.com and other lazy asses. Thanks, Brinna. Somebody in California, buy Brinna a bud!

Excellent analysis of the situation. And I like your title. Dugg, by the way.

Are you the Brinna of Brinna's Broadsides? You haven't shared your Blogger profile, so I can't tell. In any case, thanks!

Yes, Evan, I am. I heard about the patent at the Patients Out of Time conference at Asilomar last April (http://www.medicalcannabis.com/). I've made it a personal mission of mine to get that information out there in as many ways as possible. I mentioned the patent in a comment on an article by Paul Armentano on Cancer and Cannabis for Huffington post. It got a boost when he picked it up and mentioned it in an article for alternet last July, about Big Pharma. As you can see, the power is in networking. I am delighted that you picked it up,too, and added your own twist to the issue. Keep up the good writing and good work.

Thanks, Brinna. Now here's a sleeper of a story for you: Sen. Mike Gravel (remember, the old angry guy who ran for the Dem nomination?) hardly got a chance to tell the main reason he sacrificed his retirement to run: The National Initiative for Democracy, a project for better and national ballot initiatives. It's the ultimate check and balance to a Congress for sale. I started the first "direct" democracy website, http:Vote.org in 1995 and it now promotes Gravel's project -and there's something everyone can do about it.

I like to bring things up like a quote from Dr. Lester Grinspoon - cannabis is "remarkably NON-TOXIC" and I use it as a debate stopper by asking "What part of NON-TOXIC do you not understand? Another debate stopper is the fact that Cannabis is a Human Right! Period.
